Process of making
The use of three small panels in a triangular formation comes from a previous series in which the primary colours were the basis, drawing on the history of colour theory illustrations. The current series uses the “New Modern Theory Color Mixing Set from GOLDEN” as a starting point: “... made up of eight organic colors, providing a warm and cool selection from each hue space, plus Phthalo Green and Titanium White.” The panels of colour mixing are rearranged to make a work of art.
The idea of colour theory and its illustrations was an attempt to make a non-figurative painting that wasn’t an abstract painting either. Thinking about what a viewer might make of this led to adding a fourth small panel that revived another previous series: Portrait of the Viewer, from around 2013. Rearranged to be in keeping with the manner of the colour mixing panels.
